Anyone else going through this with their kids?

OD had applied for five (that's the maximum I think) and so far has four interviews.  Is that good?  No idea who many is the norm.  Or maybe the majority get interviews and they whittle them down after that?

MEMEMEME!

ED has applied for five, and received four offers, no interviews.   She is waiting on Bath Spa.

The entire thing is terrifying me.  Do you know how money works Kismet?

I think maybe the interviews depends on the subject?  OD wants to do textiles so has had to take a portfolio of her work.  What subject does your DD want to do and where?  Four offers is FAB!  Well done to her.

We've been to Norwich this weekend, OH took her to Cardiff last week and he's taking her to Swansea next week plus she has an i/v for Bolton.  Only one she's not heard from is Plymouth.  They are mostly art colleges though rather than the main uni iykwim/

Finances, I know we get nowt 'cos we are so rich, not! lol  Seriously though Martin's Money Supermarket has a really good no nonsense guide to how it all works.  Will try and find you the link.

I have no idea how OD will cope financially as whilst we earn too much to get any grants etc we don't really earn enough to give her a great deal of cash per month and on top of that she generally spends spends spends which is fine with her money but not ours!  Trouble is I don't want her to struggle either, major dilemma as even if she works she'll struggle to make ends meet even if she doesn make MAJOR changes to her current spending habits!

ES is still waiting to hear from all his choices. We are in Scotland though. Some of his friends have heard so he is getting a bit impatient. I am assuming that when he does (hopefully) get offers they will have conditions attached as his friends who have heard so far all have unconditional offers which I think means they already have the qualifications required. ES is hoping to do International Business or another Business course. His tuition fees will be free living in Scotland but the courses up here are 4 years so we will need to find 4 years living expenses. We earn just over the threshhold so no help here either. The first year he will live in uni accommodation which will probably cost around £4000 going by this years prices and that doesn't include food. No idea how we are all going to manage but like your daughter Kismet he will have to change his spending habits drastically.

I am excited at the thought of him going and all the opportunites uni will bring, worried how he will cope away from us and also worried about the finances.

Only way we could give her enough money to make a big differnece is to not have our hols and social life and I'm afraid that is simply not an option.  It's her career/life not ours!  But I am very much hoping she grows up and takes responsibility for her own life!

She is going to do pschology Kis.  She applied to Bangor (her first choice) Bradford, Cambridge (nto the posh one!), Bath and somewhere else.  I can't even remember now.

Norwich is nice - we live here!  (well nearly) - we can be her emergency people.

It is tremendously difficult isn't it.  I'm worried stiff.

ED has taken an exam for a scholarship which I hope she gets, but she isn't that positive about it - going to wales gets you an additional grant - but I don't know the earnings limits, I doubt she'll get much though by way of grant.  We have said we'll pay her accomodation for the first year (£100 a week) but apart from that she's on her own.

I am worried about it though - YD is going next year - so we will have two of them at Uni!  And SS goes to college in september, but he'll still be living at home.

It's an exciting time, but stressful equally.   Good luck to all of them, I hope they get on the courses they want and that the grant/loan system isn't as blooming useless as it was when we were applying for ED!

Good luck to Kis and Corris' daughters, and Lewmur's son, with their applications.  Hope they all get good offers from their preferred destinations.

Is your DD doing pschology A Level, Corris?  It seems a really popular choice at the moment, and the sort of thing I think my DD would enjoy.  Not sure if her school offers it, although she might fancy a change of venue for sixth form anyway.

Thanks for the good luck wishes Smile

She's been turned down for Cardiff :-( but she had another i/v today (Swansea) and has two more to go later this month and one in March.

Corris - I think in Wales the grant is not means tested, I checked and at Swansea today they were told it was worth £1,000 per year so well worth having!

Leeds - I understand Psychology is very popular because it's not taught at GCSE and students are often advised to try something new at College/6th form.  My OD did it at A level and did okay at it and it can be quite useful in various careers eg, HR, Management, bascially anything dealing with people!

I'm worried sick that OD will get herself into a silly amount of debt and I don't mean student loans but overdrafts and loans from sharks, wouldn't put anything past this one!

Good luck to Corris' DD and Lewmur's DS.
