To send a private message (PM) to someone, just click on the PM icon on their user profile - here's a picture, the link is outlined in red:

There's also a link to your Private message section on the right-hand side of every page of the site:

Once in your PM box, you can use the drop-down menus and buttons to view, compose, manage your contacts and file your PMs:
