How do you round decimals in Year 5?

Rounding decimals is a way to make numbers simpler and easier to work with, and it's something your child will be learning in Year 5.

When we round decimals, we look at the number in the decimal place just to the right of the place we're rounding to, and if that number is 5 or higher, we round up. If it's 4 or lower, we round down. For example, if we're rounding 3.76 to one decimal place, we look at the second decimal place (the 6). Since 6 is higher than 5, we round the number up to 3.8.

What's an example of rounding to the nearest whole number?

Rounding to the nearest whole number means looking at the first digit after the decimal point and deciding whether to round up or down. Let's take the number 7.4 as an example. The digit after the decimal point is 4. Since 4 is less than 5, we round down, making the number 7.

What's an example of rounding the nearest decimal place?

Identify the decimal places: Look at the number 6.73. The first digit after the decimal point is 7 (the tenths place), and the second digit after the decimal point is 3 (the hundredths place).

Look at the hundredths place: To round to the nearest decimal place (or tenths place), check the digit in the hundredths place. Here, it’s 3.

Decide to round up or down: If the hundredths place digit is 5 or higher, you round up the tenths place digit by one. If it's 4 or lower, you keep the tenths place digit the same. Since 3 is less than 5, we round down.

Round the number: So, we keep the tenths place digit as 7. Therefore, 6.73 rounded to the nearest decimal place is 6.7.
