Persuasive texts: advertising
Adverts are designed to persuade people to buy things. The text is written to try to make the product sound as fantastic as possible. Read this advert for a cleaning robot then see if you can spot some of the features often used in adverts in the text.
Planning, writing and designing your own advert
Imagine that you are creating a product that you think people will want to use. This can be a completely made-up, make-believe product – it could even be magic! Use your imagination as much as possible. Draw a picture of your product below. Label it to show what the different features are and how it will be used.
Giving oral instructions and writing a manual
Find an appliance in the home that you don’t know how to use, for example a hairdryer, printer or microwave. Have a go using the appliance yourself. Now, the adult who is helping you is going to follow YOUR commands in using the appliance. They must do exactly as you say! This means that your instructions must be very clear.
Answering open and closed questions
A closed question is one which only requires a simple answer (usually one word), for example: What is your name? An open question allows the person being asked to talk more freely in a variety of different ways, for example: How are you feeling? Here are some questions for Perseus. Cut them out and sort them into a pile of closed questions and a pile of open questions.

A newspaper article is a form of recount. Can you write your own newspaper report? Use the writing frame provided or make your own. Remember to include all the important features of a newspaper article.

Think of a topic that you could write your own explanation text about. Think of something you are interested in. Now make some notes on your topic then create a writing frame, either on the computer or by drawing lines with a pencil and ruler. Plan your explanation text on your writing frame. A FACT is something which can be proven to be true. An OPINION is what somebody feels or thinks about something. Someone has written a paragraph about spaghetti bolognese. Highlight the facts in blue and the opinions in red.
