The 11+ in Barnet and Enfield

Barnet and Enfield 11+ guide for parents
Competition is fierce for places at Barnet and Enfield's grammar schools, so what does the 11+ test involve?

Which schools require an 11+ pass?

There are four grammar schools in Barnet, and one in Enfield:

Mill Hill County High School is partially selective and also has 24 music places and 12 dance places, and Latymer has 20 music places. Children will need to audition for these places.

What do the tests involve?

Each school offers a different combination of areas to be assessed in their tests. The table below summarises the contents of the test at each school:

SchoolTests administered
Henrietta BarnettRound one: verbal reasoning (VR), non-verbal reasoning (NVR) and English (typically multiple choice). Round two: English and maths (usually includes comprehension or creative writing)
Mill HillSplit into three sessions. Round one: literacy, numeracy, VR and NVR. Round two: interview and writing task. Round three: problem-solving and teamwork exercise.
Queen Elizabeth'sEnglish and maths (normally multiple choice)
St Michael's VR, non-verbal reasoning (NVR), English and maths
LatymerPaper one: maths and VR (multiple choice). Paper two: English reading and writing tasks (set by school)

The format of the test varies between the schools too, from multiple-choice questions to a piece of creative writing. You'll find more detailed information on testing arrangements on the schools' websites. Henrietta Barnett holds its tests in two rounds, with only the top 300 girls invited back for round two, while children applying for a selective place at Mill Hill take an initial VR test, and successful candidates are then recalled for two further tests.

What version of the test is used?

How do you arrange for your child to take the test?

For any of the Barnet schools, you will need to fill in a test application form in order for your child to sit the entrance test. Barnet Local Authority's website has comprehensive information on each school, including their admissions criteria and how to register. If you're interested in The Latymer School need to fill in the school's online registration form. For families without online access, paper copies are available from the school office. Photographic ID is required for all candidates taking the test.

Where are the tests held?

The tests are held in the individual schools.

What is the pass mark?

The required standard differs from school to school; for example, to be considered for a place at Queen Elizabeth's, your child will need a mark above 220, while Henrietta Barnett allocates its places in rank order, and there is no set pass mark. Some of the schools are heavily over-subscribed: Henrietta Barnet receives in excess of 2000 applicants for 93 places in Year 7, and the Latymer School regularly receives 10 applications for each of the 186 places available. You'll find more details about each school’s admission criteria on their websites.

How can I help prepare my child?

The schools differ in how they advise parents to help their child prepare, so visit their websites for more details, including familiarisation papers to download or information on where to buy relevant practice materials.

You can find useful area-specific e-papers created, designed to reflect exam formats from Exam Paper Plus:

Please note, while every effort is made to ensure the information we provide about individual schools is accurate, admissions arrangements for Year 7 entry change on a regular basis, and it is essential to check for the most up-to-date advice on schools' own websites.

NB: TheSchoolRun receives a small commission from sales made through Exam Paper Plus.
