Great Expectations is a novel written by Charles Dickens in 1861. In this passage the protagonist Pip visits an old lady who lives nearby, Miss Havisham. She was abandoned at the altar by the man she was about to marry and has spent the rest of her life indoors, still wearing her wedding dress.
