TheSchoolRun.com closure date
As we informed you a few months ago, TheSchoolRun has had to make the difficult decision to close due to financial pressures and the company has now ceased trading. We had hoped to keep our content available through a partnership with another educational provider, but this provider has since withdrawn from the agreement.
As a result, we now have to permanently close TheSchoolRun.com. However, to give subscribers time to download any content they’d like to keep, we will keep the website open until 31st July 2025. After this date, the site will be taken down and there will be no further access to any resources. We strongly encourage you to download and save any resources you think you may want to use in the future.
In particular, we suggest downloading:
- Learning packs
- All the worksheets from the 11+ programme, if you are following this with your child
- Complete Learning Journey programmes (the packs below include all 40 worksheets for each programme)
You should already have received 16 primary school eBooks (worth £108.84) to download and keep. If you haven’t received these, please contact us at [email protected] before 31st July 2025, and we will send them to you.
We are very sorry that there is no way to continue offering access to resources and sincerely apologise for the inconvenience caused.
Reading comprehension: The Magic Lamp
Read this story about a magic land and then see if you can answer the questions afterwards.
Why are reading comprehension activities important for KS1 children?
Reading comprehension activities are important for KS1 children because they:
- Build understanding
They help children understand what they read, making stories and information more meaningful and fun. - Boost vocabulary
These activities introduce new words, which expands their language skills and makes them better communicators. - Encourage thinking
They develop critical thinking skills, as children learn to ask questions, make predictions and connect ideas.
What is an example of a reading comprehension activity in KS1?
Reading comprehension is the ability to understand and make sense of what you read. It involves not just reading the words, but also grasping the meaning behind them, recognising the main ideas, making inferences and connecting the text to your own knowledge and experiences.
Your child will be given an excerpt, a short story or an article to read and then they will be asked questions that will reveal how much of the text they comprehend (or understand).
Here is a very simple example:
Excerpt: Tommy the cat loved to play in the garden. He would chase butterflies and climb trees all day long.
Question: What did Tommy the cat love to do in the garden?
Answer: Tommy loved to chase butterflies and climb trees.
How will this KS1 reading comprehension worksheet help my child?
This reading comprehension PDF was created by a primary school teacher and mimics a common activity that your child will come across at school. They will need to read the text, The Magic Lamp, and use their reading comprehension skills to answer the questions on the following page.
