Be a scientist
This activity will develop your child's imagination and design skills.
Animal spinners
Cut the spinners out, stick them on card and push a pencil through the middle. Spin both wheels at the same time and act out or talk about the two animals that you land on (for example, talk like a frog or grow like a caterpillar!). Now research your favourite animal.
A to Z of body parts
Play a car game listing an A to Z of parts of the body, for example: arm, belly button, cuticles… If you get stuck you may need to be creative and think of variations (for example, digits instead of fingers). If you’re playing with older children they could also list internal organs!

What do we do in autumn and winter?
Draw a picture of yourself in the autumn and a picture of yourself in the winter, then answer these questions about what you do in these seasons.
Ordering months and talking about seasons
Can you order the months of the year? Cut out all the months and stick them on a piece of paper in order. Now, see if you can put them into the right seasons.
Naming the seasons
How well do you know your seasons? Cut out their names below and stick them next to the right picture, then cut out the words at the bottom of the sheet and stick them next to the season you think they belong in.
Looking at day length in different seasons
Have a look at the dates in this table. Which season are each of these dates in? Can you count how many hours of daylight are in each day?
Grouping objects from nature
Some of these things are living, some were once alive but are now dead and some have never been alive. Can you cut out the cards and group them in the circles?
Food chains in habitats
Look at these jumbled-up food chain cards. Can you cut them out and order them correctly? Remember to draw arrows from one to the next (the arrow points from the animal being eaten to the animal eating it).
Create an autumn scrapbook
Autumn is a great time for collecting! Why not go on an autumn treasure hunt and make a scrapbook with all the things you discover.
Be a butterfly spotter
You will see lots of butterflies around in the summer. Flowers are in bloom and butterflies get their food by flying from flower to flower, sticking their long tongues out to suck the nectar (a sugary liquid) up. Can you spot any butterflies in your garden or to a nearby park. Look in the bushes. Did you see any of these butterflies?
Writing numerals up to 100
In Year 1, your child needs to be able to write the numbers 1 to 100 in numerals. Cut out the two passages below. Give the pink one to your child. Read out the blue one, and ask them to write the numbers into the gaps as you say them out loud.

Read and write numbers 1 to 20 in numerals
Shall we have a go at reading and writing numbers up to 20? For each of the following numbers, write the number in numerals and words in the blank boxes. When you have finished, cut the coloured strips out then put the strips into order.
Finding multiples of 10
Sid the snake can only eat multiples of 10. Can you put a circle around all the multiples of 10 below? Then draw a line joining them all up so Sid knows where to go!

The Y1 Phonics Screening Check tests children's knowledge of phonics with a mixture of real and nonsense words. Look through the official past paper for 2014 to see what sort of words your child will be asked to read.
